Pattern 1853 Enfield

A landmark of mid-19th century military small arms, the Pattern 1853 Enfield was widely regarded as the finest European service musket of its day — and it saw extensive use on both sides of the American Civil War. The Pedersoli reproduction captures the look, feel, and functional details of the original: military-grade lines, robust furniture, and period-correct handling for living history, reenactment, and shooting enthusiasts.

Description

Introduced by the British War Department after standards and dimension studies, the Pattern 1853 set the benchmark for military rifled muskets of the era. Tens of thousands were produced by Birmingham and London makers and exported around the world; many found their way to the United States and into Civil War arsenals.

This reproduction features:

  • Blued round barrel with three-groove rifling.

  • Ladder rear sight with a sliding, stepped base for elevation adjustments.

  • Steel barrel bands and traditional brass furniture (buttplate/triggerguard fittings).

  • Jag-slot ramrod tip and two sling swivels (one beneath the front band, one forward of the trigger guard).

  • Case-hardened lock and walnut stock finished to period appearance.

Designed to perform like the originals while using modern manufacturing tolerances for reliable service, this Enfield is equally appropriate for display, living history firing demonstrations, and black powder shooting.
