The Army of Northern Virginia is probably the stereotype of the Confederate Army. Led by General Robert E. Lee, they may be the origin for much of the romanticized images of the Confederate Army. Accounts and photographs of the ANV are easier to find than any other Army group of the Confederacy.
In mid 1862 the Richmond Depot Type#1 was phased out for Type #2. The Type #2 jacket is often referred to as 'Mid War' and was issued mid 1862 through mid 1864. Distinguishing features of Type #2 are Epaulettes and Belt Loops.
